Due to the low cost and ready availability of buses and taxis, it isn't necessary.
SECONDARY AIR SYSTEM NOT READY MERCEDES CODE
This code will set when the PCM (powertrain control module) has received a voltage signal from the secondary air injection system which falls outside of the expected parameters, as defined by the. Some of the buses are full-size Mercedes Benzes equipped with air-con. * Hold at a steady speed of 55 to 60 mph for five minutes. The secondary air injection system pumps ambient air into the engine’s exhaust system in order to reduce emissions. Every other monitor is ready, there are no fault codes, and here is California, every monitor must be set with the exception of Evap to pass smog. * Accelerate back to 55 to 60 mph at  throttle. We currently swapped cars, as my commute is about 80 miles each way per day and I have put over 400 miles on this car and the secondary air monitor will not set. * Decelerate (coast down) to 20 mph without braking or depressing the clutch. * Hold at a steady speed of 55 mph for three minutes. * Turn the A/C and rear defrost off, and accelerate to 55 mph at half throttle. Idle the engine in drive for two and a half minutes with the A/C and rear defroster on.
SECONDARY AIR SYSTEM NOT READY MERCEDES DRIVER
Most drive cycles will be difficult to follow exactly under normal driving conditions, so the driver should exercise caution, road safety, and courtesy to others. This condition can be achieved by allowing the vehicle to sit overnight, and then by beginning the drive cycle the next day. Here is a somewhat generic drive cycle as an exampleīegin with a cold start (coolant temperature below 122 degrees F and the coolant and air temperature sensors within 11 degrees of one another). The three items you mention are ones that should run very rapidly. The exhaust may not burn off excessive fuel without the air pump working and may clog the exhaust catalyst faster. Ive done some research and looked through several of these threads trying to clear it with no luck. Ive gotten everything repaired/tuned up but now Im up against a wall with the secondary air system monitor that will not complete its cycle. There are trouble codes that can be set that do not light the check engine light but can prevent some tests from running as well. You can do output tests through vagcom to check the pump motor, and solenoid. Ive been working on my 1999 SLK 230 trying to get it ready for a smog test.

BUT you may want to have the car scanned with a MB specific scan tool. You need to drive specific drive cycles to get the monitors to run.
